Chapter 8: Inspection

The housekeeper came to Fenn House on Wednesday at four.

Chris was in the dining hall when his phone buzzed with the message from the house prefect.

Inspection in progress, room 12. Please come to the door.

He ran.

He was out of breath when he reached the second floor, and the housekeeper was already standing in the open doorway with a clipboard.

She was a gray-haired woman in a blue cardigan, and she looked more tired than suspicious.

"Mr. Chesbro," she said.

"This room is very clean."

"Thank you."

"The bed is made. The books are tidy. The towel is dry."

She looked at the towel.

"Dry since when?"

"I showered this morning."

"It would be damp."

"It's cold in here. It dries fast."

"It's seventy degrees in here," she said, and wrote on her clipboard.

Chris's stomach turned over.

"The log says you have not used your swipe card at the dorm entrance after ten o'clock for eleven nights."

"I study late in the library."

"The library closes at midnight."

"Yes."

"Where do you sleep, Mr. Chesbro?"

He opened his mouth.

He had no answer ready, and the silence stretched out.

"With me."

Both of them turned.

Leander Ashgrove stood in the hallway with his tie loose and a stack of books in his arms.

He looked completely at ease.

"I'm sorry?" the housekeeper said.
