Chapter 25: The Truce Ball
Six months to the night, the penthouse floor of the Seaview was full of masks again.
Two families, half the city, and a string quartet playing Sinatra too slowly.
Lexie and I stood at the back in our masks.
Gold sequins for me, stretched over six months of Bean.
Silver for her, with a slit up the side so she could walk.
At ten o'clock Rino tapped the microphone on the little stage by the windows.
He wore a white dinner jacket and no mask at all.
The ledger was under his arm.
"Six months ago tonight," he said, "somebody robbed both our houses."
He held the black book over his head.
"And the thieves came dressed for it."
He nodded to the sound booth.
A spotlight swung across the dance floor and found us at the back, gold and silver.
Two hundred masks turned around.
I took Lexie's hand.
We walked up the middle of the room together, slowly, because she was six months pregnant and I was in heels.
At the foot of the stage we took our masks off.
"Hi," I said to the room. "Most of you know me. I brought you a drink at some point."
