Chapter 31: The Bakery
"Selling it to who?" I said.
Lexie scrolled down the translation.
"She doesn't say who. She says her hands hurt and the big oven is older than she is."
"Nothing is older than she is."
"She says a man wants it for a phone shop."
I took the postcard out of her hand.
The underlined word was the only one I could read.
Cash.
Behind me, Ciro sat up in bed in nothing but the sheet.
"How much?" he said.
"Term four," Lexie and I said at the same time.
Eleven days later the bakery door opened before we got to the step.
The old woman stood there in her flour-dusted apron, exactly as tall and as fierce as I remembered.
Then she looked past us at the two men pushing a double stroller the size of a small car over the cobblestones.
She said something long in French and crossed herself.
"I think she said she knew it," Lexie said.
She bent over the stroller.
Bean looked up at her and screamed. Peanut slept through it.
The old woman laughed, the first time I'd ever heard her laugh, and kissed both of them on the forehead.
