Chapter 10: Winter
"Why?" I asked.
My mother stood in my bedroom doorway with her glasses swinging on their cord.
"Because I'm asking you."
"Mom, I paid your rent today. All three months. I'm not walking out on nine thousand dollars because you asked."
"I worked in that house," Rosalie said. "One winter. I was nineteen."
I stared at her.
I had lived with that woman for twenty-six years.
She had never once told me where she worked before I was born.
"You never said," I told her.
"I'm saying it now. I left. That's all."
"That's not all," I said. "Why did you leave?"
She turned her face to the wall, to the saint with her back to us.
"Eat your fish," my mother said, and went down the stairs.
I did not sleep.
In the morning I took the bus back up the hill.
At ten, a message came by way of the cook.
Mrs. Kostka wished to see me in the east wing.
Halina sat in the same straight chair, with her hands folded over her cane.
She did not ask me to sit.
"My son tells me nothing," she said. "But a house like this speaks."
She looked at me.
"I hear that you have been in the carriage house and in Casimir's bed."
My face went hot.
"Mrs. Kostka."
"You will be gone by New Year's," she said. "The girls always are."
She said it without heat.
"You may keep what they pay you. But you will not stay, and you will not speak of this house to anyone."
"May I ask why?" I said.
"Because I have said so."
"My mother worked in this house," I said. "One winter. Thirty-six years ago."
