Chapter 11: The Key
I did not ask him anything else in the conservatory.
I lay with my cheek on his chest and told myself that a file was a file.
Every employer had one.
It would have my mother's name in it, because I had written it there myself.
"You're thinking," Cas said, without opening his eyes.
"I'm trying not to," I said.
"Come upstairs."
"Is that an order?"
"It is a request," Cas said.
His hand moved in my hair.
"I would like you in my bed, with the door shut, where I can keep you warm."
I sat up and looked at him.
Nobody had ever said anything like that to me, in a voice that rough and that plain.
"Ask properly," I said.
The corner of his mouth moved.
"Siobhan," Cas said. "Would you come upstairs with me and let me hold you?"
"Yes."
We dressed in silence.
He carried my dress over his arm and walked me through the dark house to the west stairs.
One hand stayed at the small of my back.
At his bedroom door he stopped and let me go in first.
I turned and shut it myself, and the latch clicked, and I leaned my back against it.
The room was warm.
A single lamp burned by the bed, and the windows over the river were black.
"Undress me," I said.
He crossed to me and stood close, and he took my face in both hands.
"Slowly?"
"Slowly. You said that was my lesson."
"It was." He kissed my forehead. "You learn quickly."
He undid my dress, and slid it from my shoulders.
He kissed the hollow of my throat and the point of my shoulder, and the curve below my collarbone.
He unhooked my bra, and he looked at me for a long time.
