Chapter 16: The Third Sheet

Siobhan's POV

I walked into the library without knocking.

The brass stop held the door wide, the fire was lit, and both of them were already standing.

Cas was behind the desk.

Leo was at the mantel, in the same place he had stood on the first day.

I crossed the rug and laid my folded sheet on the blotter, and I opened it flat with my hand.

"I wrote you a rule sheet," I said.

Neither man moved.

It was one page, in my own handwriting, with five lines.

"You wrote yours for me on the first day," I said. "This one is for you. Read it out loud, Cas."

He picked it up.

His hand was steady, but his voice was not.

"One. The ledger leaves the study," he read.

"It leaves tonight."

"Two. Every woman in it hears the truth in person, not in an envelope."

"Three," Leo read over his shoulder, quietly. "Nobody pays anybody to be quiet again."

"Four." Cas stopped, and then went on. "Nobody touches Siobhan Calloran unless she says."

"Five," I said.

"Five. Halina Kostka says it aloud," he read.

He set the page down very carefully.

"Our mother," he said.

"Halina told my mother that winter was hard on the girls, over a cup of tea."

I kept my voice level.

"She sent a check this morning. If she wants to be quiet, she can be quiet. But she'll say it first."
