Chapter 18: The Order
I carried Leo's list across the yard to the main house at midnight, and Cas's bedroom door was standing open.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed in his shirtsleeves, with his elbows on his knees and the lamp on.
He had been waiting.
I walked in and closed the door myself.
"A dozen women," I said, and held up the page. "Unpaid. My mother is the first."
"I know," Cas said.
"She won't take your money."
"I know that too."
"She wants somebody to say it out loud," I said.
"Then we will say it." He stood. "Siobhan, may I speak?"
"You may."
"I want to say something about the margin."
I folded my arms.
"I wrote that note in pencil because I could not write it in ink," Cas said.
He looked at the floor.
"I was afraid of you before you walked in."
He made himself look up.
"I thought, this girl will have her mother's eyes, and she will look at me, and she will know."
"And I did look at you," I said.
"You did. You laid two sheets of paper on my desk and asked which of us was lying."
His voice was low.
"I have thought about that every hour since. Nobody had ever told me to my face to choose between the truth and the lie."
"You didn't choose," I said.
"No. I told you not to ask my brother."
My throat tightened.
"Here is the other thing." He crossed the floor and stopped an arm's length from me.
"Every touch was yours to start. The file never touched you. I did not take your hand because of your mother's name."
"Then why?" I asked.
"Because you stood in my library and told me what you wanted. I have not stopped hearing it since."
