Cas's POV

I signed the papers at six that morning, before I had earned the right to be glad.

The lawyer had come to the library in a camel coat and a bad temper.

He read the paragraph aloud twice.

The house on the bluff would be listed on the twenty-sixth.

Every dollar of the sale would go to a fund in the names of the women in the book.

The family trust would pay out whatever the house could not.

"Mr. Kostka," he said, "you understand you'll have nowhere to live."

"I have a carriage house I can borrow from my brother," I said.

"And your mother?"

"My mother will have her widow's portion and the east wing until the closing. After that she can live where she likes."

"Without a house?" he asked.

"With a great deal of money," I said. "She'll manage."

I signed.

The pen did not shake.

I had thought it would.

Now the house stood quiet around me, with its doors all open and the last of the guests gone home.

I climbed the west stairs at midnight with my pulse going hard.

She was already in my room.

She had come up before me, and the door was shut, and the lamp was lit.

She sat on the edge of my bed in the black dress she had read the book in.

Her braid was undone, and her shoes lay on the floor.

She looked up when I came in.

"You're late," Siobhan said.

"I was thanking Leo."

"Did he cry?" she asked.

"He said he'd been crying since the second course."
