Chapter 23: Door Shut

He led me up the west stairs by the hand, and neither of us said a word.

His bedroom door stood open, and a light burned in the room beyond.

I could hear water running.

"What have you done?" I asked.

"I ran a bath." He sounded almost shy. "You have not sat down in three days."

The bathroom was a long white room with a clawfoot tub under the window.

Steam fogged the glass, and the lamp burned low, and there was a bar of plain soap on the rim.

I stood in the doorway.

"This is your idea of an order?" I said.

"It is a request."

I looked at him for a long moment, and then I stepped into the bathroom, pulled him in after me by his shirt, and shut the door behind us.

The latch clicked.

"There," I said. "Now it's a request I can accept."

Cas smiled.

I undressed in the steam while he watched with his back against the door and his arms folded.

I took my time over each button.

When I stepped out of my skirt and my underwear he crossed to me, and I saw that his hands were not quite steady.

"May I?" he asked.

"You may."

He took the pins out of my braid and unwound it, and laid it over my shoulder.

Then he stripped, quickly, and handed me down into the water.

It was almost too hot.

I sank into it with a long groan.

He climbed in behind me and settled me between his thighs, with my back against his chest.

His arms closed round me.

For a time we only breathed.

"Tell me what to do," he said finally, close to my ear.

"Wash my hair."

"Yes, Miss Calloran."

He scooped water in his palm and let it run over my head, and then he worked the soap into my hair with his fingers.
