Chapter 22: Pen
On Saturday morning Will set a form on my kitchen table, face down, and put a pen on top of it.
It was a good pen, a black ballpoint with the EMS logo worn off the barrel.
"Before you look," he said, "you can say no. It's a form. They make white-out."
I turned it over.
Indianapolis EMS, Employee Change of Beneficiary and Emergency Contact.
I read the title twice.
Then I read it a third time, because I was a little afraid of my face.
"You went to your locker," I said.
"Yesterday. After the box."
"This is the same form."
"It's not the same form. Dean's was from a lending company. Mine's from the city." He sat across from me. "I wasn't going to hide it in a glove box, either."
He picked up the pen and pulled the page toward him.
"Watch me do it," he said, "so you know it's real."
He wrote slowly, in square block capitals.
Emergency contact.
CLAIRE M. KESSLER.
Phone number, her cell, from memory.
Relationship.
He stopped with the tip of the pen touching the paper.
He wrote NEIGHBOR and drew a neat line through it.
Then he wrote, under it, in smaller letters, MINE.
"That's not a choice on the dropdown," I said.
"It's paper. There's no dropdown."
"Then they'll have to take it."
Under that, in the beneficiary box, he wrote my name again, and a hundred percent.
He put the pen down and slid the page across the table.
I read it.
I read it the way you read a diagnosis you have been told is good.
"It's been less than two weeks," I said.
