Chapter 6: Nine O'Clock Tomorrow

Our two front doors face each other across a four-foot vestibule with a radiator and a mat that says WIPE YOUR PAWS.

Will walked me to mine at ten past midnight, and neither of us had said a word since the car.

I got the key in the lock and didn't turn it.

"I'm legally married for nine more hours," I said.

"I can count."

"I'm saying it so you can't say I didn't."

He stood a foot behind me.

I could feel him there, all of him.

"Nobody has touched me in over a year," I said. "I've been good for fifty-eight days, and I have spent this whole weekend being the most decent woman in Indiana."

"You have."

"I'm so tired of being good, Will."

I turned around.

He was looking at my mouth.

"Tell me to go home," he said, very low.

"No."

I took two fistfuls of his jacket and pulled.

He kissed me like he'd been holding his breath for three years.

My back hit the door.

His hand went into my hair.

His other hand went flat against the wood beside my head.

The whole length of him pinned me there, warm and hard and shaking a little.

I made a sound I didn't recognize.

"Open the door," he said against my jaw.

"Can't. Hands are busy."

I had them under his shirt, on skin, on the hot flat plane of his stomach, and I wasn't stopping.

He reached past me and turned the key himself.

We fell into my hallway.

He kicked the door shut behind us.

I tore at the buttons of his uniform shirt, and he dragged my sweater up over my head.

Somewhere my keys hit the floor and the sapphire rolled into a corner, and for once I didn't care.

I dropped to the hall bench, pulling him down with me, and unhooked my own bra because he was taking too long.

His eyes went dark.

"God, Claire."

"Look at me later. Put your mouth on me now."
