Chapter 12: The Registry Stone
The Registry Hall was a long stone barn at the foot of the training yard.
It had no windows, and the air smelled of cold iron.
Along one wall stood the Stone.
It was a boulder taller than a man, as black as a well, with one side cut flat and polished.
Wooden screens divided the flat face into booths, four students at a time, with a registrar's table at the far end.
A line of freshmen stretched out the door and into the snow, shuffling forward in silence.
Tae-gang stood in it with a high collar buttoned to his jaw.
The fresh bite beneath his ear showed anyway, a dark oval under the cloth edge.
Three students had already looked at it and looked away.
Beside him, Seo-hwan waited with his new round spectacles on his nose and the base of his throat wrapped in a scarf.
His eyes were enormous behind the glass.
He was holding Tae-gang's hand.
They were doing it inside the long sleeves of their robes, where nobody could see.
