Chapter 13: Wrong Crest
"Next four," the registrar said again, and still did not look up.
Tae-gang's feet moved before his head did.
He and Seo-hwan walked out of the Registry Hall side by side, with the line of freshmen watching them go.
Nobody spoke until they had crossed the whole training yard.
Behind the training hall, where the snow lay untouched against the back wall, Seo-hwan stopped.
He pulled off his spectacles and stared at his own right hand.
"The Stone could be wrong," he said.
"It could."
"It has never been wrong in three hundred years."
"I know."
"Then there is one way to be sure." Seo-hwan looked up. "Show me the third form."
"Which one?"
"Yours." His voice shook. "The Roaring Palm. The one you can't do."
Tae-gang's mouth went dry.
"It won't work for me either, Seo-hwan. Your clan's arts and mine are not the same."
"Show me the stance. Please."
Tae-gang showed him.
He set his feet wide and dropped his weight, the way his father had drilled it into him since he was six.
He drew the right palm back by the hip, and the left forward, open and flat.
"Breath goes down to the belly and burns," he said. "Then the burn climbs the spine and leaves through the palm. That's the whole form. Mine stops at the shoulder. Every time."
Seo-hwan copied the stance.
He copied it badly, with his narrow feet too close together, and his long hair slid forward over his shoulder.
He drew his breath down.
Tae-gang saw the moment it caught.
A flush ran up Seo-hwan's neck, and the air around his raised hand shimmered.
"Seo-hwan."
"I feel it."
"Let it go."
Seo-hwan thrust his palm at the snow bank.
There was a flat, heavy roar.
