Chapter 14: Letters Home
Tae-gang hauled his trousers up with one hand and slid the door open a crack with the other.
The courier was a boy in a dusty traveling cloak, panting from the steps.
"Park Dae-sik? Mun Ju-an? The masters told me not to wait for an answer."
He pressed two folded letters into Tae-gang's hand and fled back down the stairs.
Tae-gang shut the door.
"They're not about us," he said, looking at the seals. "They left home days ago. Before the Stone."
Seo-hwan let out a long breath and leaned on the desk.
"Then they're just letters."
"Just letters."
They sat down together on the warm half of the floor, and each took one.
The paper in Tae-gang's hand was the coarse, thick kind his father always used.
The brush strokes were huge and square.
He read it in the lamplight with his lips moving.
It said that the barley was in, and that the lower fields had flooded again.
It said that the Hall's disciples were sparring too softly without him.
It said that the Founders' Day banquet was coming.
The Tiger master had been invited as an honored guest of the Alliance, and would climb the mountain to see his boy.
"Do not lose," the letter said. "Do not shame the Hall."
Then, lower, in a smaller and shakier hand, there was one more line.
"Eat enough. Your mother's grave has fresh pine. I put it there on the first frost."
Tae-gang held the letter very still.
The man who wrote it was not his father by blood.
He was the man who had carried him on his shoulders to the river, and taught him to hold a palm.
