Chapter 22: Marks Where They Can See
The lane of sand was forty paces long, and it was the longest walk of Tae-gang's life.
At the end of it he stopped in front of the dais, with Seo-hwan beside him, and turned to face the yard.
"My name is Hyeon Tae-gang," he said.
His voice rang off the stone walls.
"I am twenty-two. I am the heir of the Black Tiger Hall, and my papers as Park Dae-sik were forged by my own hand."
A sound went through the crowd.
Seo-hwan drew a breath.
"My name is Jo Seo-hwan," he said, clear and dry. "I am twenty-two. I am the heir of the Silver Crane Pavilion, and I came here as Mun Ju-an, the same way."
"You lied to the Alliance," said the deputy.
"Yes," Seo-hwan said. "We did. For the Ranking Duel. And because neither of us would let our family's name lose."
"Then you admit the ban was broken."
"We do."
"Then the punishment stands. The toll."
"Wait," Tae-gang said.
He put his free hand to the collar of his robe.
Then, in front of three hundred students, five Alliance officers and two clan masters, he opened it.
