Chapter 11: The Folder

Lawrence's POV

My mother keeps her study locked, and I have had a key since I was twelve.

She never changed the lock. It had never occurred to her that I would use it.

I let myself in at ten past three in the morning, turned on the desk lamp, and opened the second drawer on the left.

The folder was where I remembered.

Brown leather, gold clasp, a label in her handwriting.

P.L.

I had seen it four years ago, when I came in looking for a pen.

I had glanced at the top page, thought, new hire, and closed the drawer.

I sat down in her chair and opened it.

The first page was a report from a private investigator. It was dated eleven days before the foundation dinner.

Subject: Millicent Anne Lanham, 24. Waitress, Starlight Diner. Father deceased. Mother deceased. Debts of eleven thousand dollars. No family in Boston.

Under that, a line my mother had written herself in blue ink.

Resemblance to L.F. approximately eighty percent. Eyes, jaw, carriage. Voice different, which is an advantage.

I read it three times.

Then I turned the page.

There were photographs of Millicent at the diner and on the bus.

In one she sat on the steps of a walk-up in Allston with her shoes off, eating noodles from a carton.

I knew that look. It was the look she got when she thought nobody could see her.

I had spent three years trying to make her do it in front of me.

I turned the page again.

There was a seating chart. Table four, the foundation dinner, four years ago.
