Chapter 18: Say My Name

He took his coat off slowly.

He hung it on the hook next to mine, and the two coats dripped together on the floor.

I did not move away from the window seat.

"Come here," I said.

He came.

I stood in front of him in the dark and unbuttoned his shirt myself, one button at a time, and he let me.

His chest rose and fell under my fingers.

"Last time you did all of it," he said quietly. "You held me down. I liked it."

"I know you did."

"Tonight you don't have to prove anything."

"I'm not proving anything."

I slid my hands up under the shirt and pushed it off his shoulders.

"I want to take my time," I said.

He closed his eyes.

I kissed him then, a long slow kiss, with his hands at his sides because I hadn't told him to move them.

He tasted like snow and the coffee from the Armory.

I felt him tremble.

"You can touch me," I said against his mouth.

His hands came up and held my face.

He kissed me carefully, and the care of it almost hurt.

I walked him backward to the bed under the slanted ceiling, and he went where I took him.

I pulled my sweater over my head.

He looked at me, and I saw his eyes go dark.

"Millicent."

"Yes."

"I want you."

"Then have me."

He laid me down on the quilt with his hands under my shoulders and his weight held off me on his arms.

His mouth went down my throat, slowly, to my collarbone.

He took his time. I didn't tell him to.

He kissed the hollow of my shoulder. He kissed along the line of my ribs and over the soft part of my stomach, and I felt myself arch up off the bed to meet him.

His hands found the clasp of my jeans, and I lifted my hips into them.

I couldn't have spoken.

He drew them off, and then the rest, and he knelt between my knees and pressed his mouth to the inside of my thigh.
