Chapter 23: The Chair by the Window

We married on a Saturday in March, in the shop, among forty buckets of ranunculus.

Roxy got ordained on the internet for nineteen dollars and wore a stole over her apron.

"I have the authority of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," she told the room. "And a glue gun."

Everyone laughed. Lawrence squeezed my hand.

There were twenty-six guests.

I checked them against the list on the chalkboard.

Lawrence and I had made it together on a Tuesday night, at a table with our knees touching.

We had drawn the chart ourselves, in chalk, so we could rub it out.

The cook from the Starlight Diner sat at table one with half the line staff.

The busboy I'd once tipped out of my own pocket had grown a beard and brought his daughter.

The treasurer sat at table two. He had worn his father's tie and had tears in his eyes.

Table three held a mix of hotel staff and the senator, who had brought a toaster oven.

"For your kitchen," he said.

"We don't have a kitchen."

"Then you can have a toaster oven in your imagination."

I wore a plain ivory dress I had bought off a rack for two hundred dollars.

Roxy had woven my crown of white ranunculus at six that morning.

Lawrence wore the charcoal suit he had worn to the gala, because I'd asked him to.

It was the only one I knew he could breathe in.

We stood in front of the window with the snow melting on the sill behind us.

"Do you have vows?" Roxy asked.

"I do," Lawrence said.

He didn't take out a card.

"Millicent, I'm going to tell you where I'll be," he said. "Home at seven on Tuesdays. At your table at breakfast, with your name in my mouth. I won't buy you anything without asking."
