Chapter 11: The Hole

Lorena did not move.

"No," she said.

Hargis blinked.

"Doctor, I wasn't asking."

"There are nine patients in this ward, two on oxygen, and one man who needs his dressing changed every hour."

She stood in front of the desk with her hands at her sides.

"You can have my keys when the warden signs a transfer for every one of them."

"Take them," Hargis said.

Two guards moved around the desk, big men in riot vests, and a third caught her wrist.

She cried out as he twisted it.

Sawyer hit him before he had decided to.

His fist took the guard under the jaw and the man folded, his helmet bouncing off the tile.

The second guard swung a baton.

Sawyer caught it on the forearm, turned inside the swing and drove his knee into the man's thigh.

The man dropped, and Sawyer tore the baton out of his hand.

"Sawyer," Lorena said.

"Stay behind the desk."

Four were left.

They came all at once, as men do when they have been told to, and the glass office was too small for them.

Sawyer fought with his back to the wall and the baton held low.

He cracked a wrist and a knee.

A shield caught him across the temple and the room swung.

He went with it, ducked the next blow, and put the baton through the back of a guard's calf.

In the ward behind the glass, patients had risen on their elbows in their beds.

An old man on oxygen was clapping, weakly, his hands barely touching.

Only one guard was still standing.

He backed against the door, white-faced, his baton shaking.

"Back off," the guard whispered.

"Gladly."

Sawyer turned, breathing hard, blood running into one eye.

Hargis had not joined the fight.

He had slipped around the desk while the men fell, and now he had Lorena by the hair.
