Chapter 24: Name on the Wall
The governor's office called back ten minutes later.
The deputy commissioner listened with his phone pressed hard to his ear and his color draining by degrees.
"Yes," he said. "Yes, I understand. Suspend all transfers." He lowered the phone. "A ninety-day review. With a monitor."
"That's clause four," Sawyer said.
"It is, God help me."
A sound rolled across the yard that had no words in it.
The sheriff's truck pulled up at the gate before the sound finished.
He climbed out with a folder under his arm and a look on his weathered face that Sawyer had not seen before.
He was smiling.
"I have a judge's order in here for Tobin Wicks," he said. "Signed at nine this morning."
Wicks sat up in the wheelchair.
"They told me I have five years left."
"You should have walked out nine years ago, until Vernon Sallow's clerk forged two extensions." The sheriff held out the page. "The judge calls it a clerical error. I call it a crime. Either way, you're free, Mr. Wicks."
The old man took the paper and read it with his taped glasses pushed up on his forehead.
He read it again.
His mouth worked.
"Well," he said at last. "I'm not sure what you do next, at sixty-three."
