Chapter 4: Lunch Is on Me
"Fair," Stefan said, when I told him I wouldn't answer, and that was the end of that night.
In the morning he left for his office before I woke.
On the counter he'd left a spare key and a sticky note.
Jessamine has the code to the lobby. I told them to let her up.
Jessamine arrived at seven with a paper bag and an opinion.
"He wrote 'Jessamine' on a post-it," she said. "In block capitals. That is not a man who's over you."
"He's not over me, or he's afraid of me?"
"Why not both?"
She took me to the bakery, a narrow shop with a yellow awning and a front window painted with wheat.
"You helped me sign the lease," she said, handing me a croissant. "You read every page, out loud, and you found a clause that would have cost me eleven thousand dollars."
"I did?"
"Lyd, you made the landlord cry."
I ate the croissant.
It was the best thing I'd tasted in nine days, and I told her so.
"Tell me about the other six years," I said. "Tell me what I was like."
She leaned both elbows on the counter.
"You were happy for a long time. Then he took you to his parents' house for Sunday dinners, and you started getting quiet."
"Quiet how?"
"You stopped eating there. You'd come here after, and eat two of these standing up." She nodded at the case. "About a year ago, you started going out on weekends and not telling me where."
"And five months ago?"
"You came in at midnight in the rain. You said you were done, and you were going to burn them down. Gently, you said. With paperwork."
I laughed, and then I stopped.
"Burn who down?"
"You wouldn't say. Lyd, I swear you looked at me and said, 'I'll tell you when I can prove it.'"
