Chapter 10: The Contract

Fiona closed the door of her office and sat on the edge of the desk with the press release still glowing on her phone.

"Gianna Marchetti," she said. "Tell me about her."

"She's the sweetest woman alive."

"Okay."

"I mean it. She taught me to make gravy the week I turned nineteen. She held my hair when I was sick at my parents' funeral. She calls me bella."

"And she's going to sit behind her son's bench for a whole series because she's sweet?"

"Because she's his mother."

Fiona looked at me for a long moment.

"You're very loyal," she said. "I like that. I just hope nobody ever takes advantage of it."

I laughed, but it came out thin.

She slid off the desk and opened a drawer.

"I have to show you something," she said. "I told Cillian I would, and he told me not to, and I'm going to anyway. I don't keep things from my friends."

"Friends?"

"Yes. Obviously. Sit down."

She put a folder in my lap.

The cover was the Ironclads' crest, and inside was a stapled contract, twelve pages long.

At the top it said ANNETTE COOLIDGE, PLAYER ANALYST, and a start date of March fourteenth.

"That's three days after the gala," I said.

"Yes. But the document was drafted in February."

I turned the pages slowly.

There was a salary figure that made me read it twice.

There was a clause about a private apartment, and I read that one three times.

HOUSING: provided by the Club at the Captain's residence, effective on arrival.
