Chapter 11: The Bridegroom
Hazel's POV
I woke up alone in the narrow bed to a deep horn blowing and the smell of cedar on the pillow.
Rafe was at the window with his back to me, dressed, with every muscle in his shoulders set.
"How many?" I said.
"A hundred Brannock wolves. Elias is with them."
I was out of bed and pulling on my own clothes before he turned around.
He crossed the room and put one hand on my arm, and then took it away.
"You don't have to go out there."
"I'm not hiding in a bed while a man comes up my mountain to look at me."
I walked out through the stone ring with Rafe a step behind my shoulder.
The Brannock Alpha was waiting on the far side of the boulders.
He was fifty-two, thick through the chest, with a gray beard braided with silver rings and a fur coat that had cost a bear its life.
Elias stood beside him, with his eyes fixed on the ground.
"There she is," the Brannock Alpha said.
He looked me over from my hair down, slowly.
"Turn around, girl."
"No."
He smiled.
"Your brother said you'd been spoiled. Turn around, so my men can see what they're paying for."
"I'm not for sale."
"Your seal says otherwise." He tipped his head at Elias. "Your brother sold you at the table, and pressed the Marrick seal on it himself. I have the paper."
His men laughed.
It was the same laugh I'd heard a hundred times at the long table, only louder.
The Brannock Alpha stepped through the gap in the boulders.
Rafe made a sound low in his chest, and the whole clearing heard it.
"Hollow law," Rafe said. "You'll stay on your own side."
