Chapter 4: Heel

I went to the gate in Rafe's shirt with my grey shawl pulled over it.

My wolf walked with me, quiet and close under my skin.

Rafe did not stand in front of me.

He walked at my shoulder, and I understood that he was leaving it to me.

Twenty Marrick warriors waited on the far side of the two boulders with torches.

None of them stepped through the gap.

Hollow law kept them out, and every one of them knew it.

Elias stood in front of them in his good coat.

Dustin was at the back with his head down.

"There you are," Elias said.

His eyes went to the silver crescent on my wrist and stayed there.

Something moved across his face and was gone.

"Hazel. Heel."

He said it in the Alpha's voice.

All my life that voice had pushed against my chest and moved me where he wanted me.

I had come to him on that word a thousand times.

I stood at the gap and waited for the push.

It came, and it slid off me.

Nothing happened.

I stayed exactly where I was, and my wolf yawned.

A warrior in the front row shifted his weight.

Elias drew himself up.

"I said heel!"

The voice went through the clearing and made the torch flames lean.

Three of his warriors went down on one knee on the gravel.

I did not move.

I felt the force of it go through me and out the other side.

"Hazel," Elias said, and it was no longer an order.

I looked at the warriors on their knees, and at the ones who had not gone down but were looking at each other.
