Chapter 17: The Price of the Yard
Byron's POV
I drove to the marina on Saturday morning with Abel's old phone on the dash.
It had buzzed twice more on the way, from a number I did not know.
I did not read the messages.
I had learned something in eight months of pencil in a notebook.
Whatever I decided alone, I decided wrong.
But I could not go to Roxy with nothing in my hands.
The harbor master was standing on the public dock outside the yacht club when I pulled in.
He was seventy, a short man with a white mustache who had run the harbor since before I built my first hull.
He did not wave.
"Faulk," he said.
"Morning."
"You've got a problem."
"I know."
"No, I mean you've got one down here." He nodded toward the glass office on the water. "Finch was at my desk at seven yesterday. He said you've been drugging your wife's daughter and having your friends in her room."
My stomach dropped.
"That's a lie," I said.
"Is it?"
I did not answer at once, and he saw that.
"Half of it's true," I said. "I'll tell you the half. The half he's leaving out is that she asked for it."
The old man looked at me for a long time.
"I knew Roxy's mother," he said. "She came down to the dock every Sunday with a thermos. She'd have wanted a straight answer from you."
"She'll get one. So will you."
"Then give it to Finch, not me. He's got the commodore, and the commodore has the dinner, and sixty people in blazers who've never had a thing to talk about in their lives."
