Chapter 15: The Ellingwood Gala
The dress was green, and it cost eleven hundred dollars, and I paid for it myself.
The receipt was folded in my clutch, next to my mother's good lipstick.
"It looks like a waterfall," my mother said in the hotel mirror.
"It looks like a bill."
"It looks like you earned it."
Benedict had booked her a suite at the Four Seasons.
She called it a crime, then took a bath in it for an hour.
The ballroom was the same one where Miriam had handed me London.
Same banner, same string quartet, same two hundred women in pastels.
This time the banner said Generosity Lives Here, and every head turned when we walked in.
Bea came behind me in a borrowed navy dress, holding a fork in her clutch like a threat.
"I told them I'm your plus-one," she whispered. "They think I'm a donor."
"You are a donor. Of a fork."
Benedict walked at my shoulder in a black tuxedo with a new brown watch strap.
He had fixed it at noon, as promised.
Miriam met us at the head of the room in silver silk, with pearls and a smile that had been ironed.
"Susie," she said warmly. "And this must be your mother."
"Yes."
"The nurse. How lovely. Helping people for so little."
