Chapter 16: Strings
Miriam walked into my bare room.
She looked at the boxes, the lamp and the bed with its tangled sheet.
Then she looked at me in Benedict's shirt, and her smile did not change by a single millimeter.
"What a cozy arrangement," she said.
"What do you want, Mrs. Ellingwood?"
"To be useful."
She opened her handbag and took out a folded sheet of cream paper.
"I think you've had a wonderful month," Miriam said. "I think it's time to make it permanent."
"How?"
"You release the Ellingwood Fellowship back to the foundation."
She laid the paper on my box of books.
"We reissue it to a more suitable candidate, and you receive five hundred thousand dollars as a courtesy."
I said nothing.
"You also sign a short statement," she went on.
"It says the scene in the dining hall was a misunderstanding between friends, and that you regret it."
"And if I don't?"
"On Monday morning, the board of Amesbury Capital votes on Benedict's removal."
