Chapter 6: Brother's Wife

By seven in the morning there were nineteen photographers on the sidewalk outside Carrow Tower.

I counted them from the sixty-first floor, through the glass, with a cup of coffee going cold in my hand.

"Don't go down," Rhys said behind me.

"I'm going to say one sentence to them."

"They will print the sentence next to the photograph of you in my elevator."

"Then I'll say it better than the photograph says it."

He crossed the room and took the cup out of my hand and set it on the table.

"Annika. Your lawyer is on his way up. Wait for him."

"I've waited two days."

"You've waited two days in a locked apartment because I asked you to," he said. "I know it's a cage. I'm sorry for it."

"That's the first time you've said sorry."

"I'll say it again when I mean it more."

I laughed. I had not planned to.

Then I stopped laughing.

"Do you know what the worst thing is?" I said. "Not Emmett. Not Delphine. I expected them to lie once I knew. The worst thing is that you stood at my wedding and looked at me, and said He's paying too much."

His face went still.

"I told you," Rhys said. "I was talking about the venue."
