Chapter 13: Every Answer

"Give me the key," I said.

Verity glanced at the cardigan pocket and smiled.

"Or what? You'll scratch me in my father's house?"

My claws came out.

They were short and dark, and they hurt coming through, because the pups had made my hands swell.

I laid the points against the soft skin inside her wrist.

"Try me," I said.

She stopped smiling.

The door shook under a fist, and then a key turned from the other side.

Addie came in first, with her small knife held low, and the oldest Greywater aunt came in behind her.

The aunt looked at Verity's wrist and then at my hand.

"Put it down, child," she said to me. "You don't need it."

She held out the empty tonic cup.

"Take this. Keep it dry. And leave before my brother-in-law's men finish their tea."

Addie took the cup.

I walked past Verity without touching her.

She said nothing at all as I went.

We drove to the Ridge cabin with the windows open, because I couldn't stand the air.

Bram was sitting on the porch steps with his elbows on his knees.

He had been there the whole time.

He stood when the truck stopped, and he looked at my face, and I watched him understand.

"She told you," he said.

"She told me what she knew. I want the rest from you."

"All of it?"

"All of it. Now."

Addie took one look at us and stayed in the truck.

I sat on the top step, and Bram stayed standing, and he started to talk.

"Two years ago the Blackthorn healer put her hand on your stomach at the full moon," he said. "She found a grey knot there. A curse. She said it was Greywater work, and old."
