Chapter 18: Drink It

The note said: I can undo it. Come to the stone early. Alone.

I burned it in the stove, because I knew a trap when it was folded and handed to me by a wolf.

Two nights later I walked into the moonstone circle on my own feet.

The curse had spent forty hours chewing on me.

Bram had stayed pressed against my back through most of them, and I had slept in snatches with his hand on my stomach, and I still had grey skin and cracked lips.

I didn't care.

The ridge was lit with torches again, and the full moon sat over the tallest stone, enormous and white.

Both packs stood in the ring, Blackthorn on the east side and Greywater on the west, with the elders in the middle.

Garland was in the host's place, leaning on his stick.

Verity stood at his shoulder in a pale blue dress, with her hair braided and a look of tender worry on her face.

She was good.

She had always been so good.

"Luna Fairweather," the old Greywater aunt said, as the host's herald, in a thin carrying voice. "You asked to speak before the claim."

"I did."

"Speak, then."

I walked into the middle of the ring.

Addie came behind me with a basket, and Burke behind her with his arms folded, and the pack made room.

I took the empty cup out of the basket and held it up in the torchlight.

"For three months," I said, "Verity Ashdane has brought me a tonic every morning. Ginger and raspberry leaf, she said, for the pups and my nerves."

"And I did," Verity said, gently. "I'm so sorry you've been unwell."
