Chapter 10: Anson on the Stairs

Daphne's POV

The knock came ten minutes after Josiah left.

I was lying in the dark with the sheet pulled up, still warm, still dizzy, and I thought he had forgotten his glasses.

I opened the door in an old T-shirt.

It was Anson.

He stood in the narrow hall with his dark coat open and his hands at his sides, and he did not say anything.

"Josiah just left," I said. "Did he see you?"

"He did." His voice was low. "He told me I should go home."

"Why didn't you?"

"Because I have been trying to for an hour and I can't."

I looked at him.

He was a man who answered every email in two lines, and he was standing in my doorway with his jaw working, unable to finish one sentence.

"Does Gray know you're here?" I asked.

A pause.

"No."

"Rule two," I said.

"I know."

"Nobody touches me without the other two knowing. I said it in the kitchen. You said done."

"I know what I said." His grey eyes held mine. "I broke it by coming. I'm not going to break it again by lying. Tell me to leave and I will, and I'll tell Gray tomorrow that I came and was turned away."

"You'd tell him that?"

"Yes."

I should have sent him home.

I knew it, and I knew exactly what I was doing.

"Come in," I said. "And shut the door."

He came in.

He closed it behind him, and I stood in the middle of my one room in my old T-shirt, with the kettle on the stove and the city in the window.

"Rule two, Mr. Pryde," I said. "You'll be hearing it from me every time."

"I'd expect nothing less."

"Good. Now take off your coat."

He took it off.

He took off his jacket, and his tie, and put them on the back of my only chair, with perfect precision.

I watched his hands, and my mouth went dry.

"Come here," I said.
