Chapter 18: On the Record

By four o'clock, three women had called the building and asked for me.

By half past, they were standing in the lobby.

The first was tall and tired, with a toddler's drawing folded in her purse.

The second was my age, in a nurse's scrubs, straight off a shift.

The third was older than the others, and she was the last assistant, the one who had lasted nine days.

"Nine days," she told me. "I thought they'd tired of me."

"I know," I said.

"I cried in the stairwell and a woman held my hand for two hours. She said they were sorry, but it was kinder not to say it themselves."

"Her name was Meredith."

"She was so nice," the woman said, and her voice broke on it.

I put my arm around her, and held on.

Josiah's phone buzzed in his hand.

He read the screen and went still.

"What is it?" Anson asked.

"The site is live on its own channel. Right now, a half hour early." Josiah turned the phone around. "She's sitting in a studio on Wacker Drive, with the editor, and they're calling it an exclusive."

On the little screen, Meredith sat in a white chair with her ankles crossed.

Her eyes were wet, and her hair was perfect.

A caption ran under her face: THE CHIEF OF STAFF SPEAKS. I TRIED TO PROTECT THEM.

"We're going there," I said.

"Daphne, our lawyers..."

"The lawyers can come after. She's on camera, and I'd like to be too."

The studio was eleven blocks away.

We took two cars, and I made the women come with me.

Nobody asked them twice.

A producer in a headset tried to stop us at the door of the studio.

Gray walked through her without breaking stride.
