Chapter 24: Tilly's First Hair
Kira's POV
On a Saturday in April, my hair was wet and I was late.
The hair dryer roared in the bathroom, and I stood in front of the mirror with a round brush.
We had a lunch at one.
My father was coming up from Cincinnati, and Rhonda's flight had landed at ten.
She had texted *I'm bringing a casserole and a lot of opinions.*
Through the bathroom door I could hear Greg in the hallway, talking to Tilly in his low, serious voice.
"Okay, here's the situation," he said. "Your mother's doing her hair."
Tilly said something that had a lot of vowels in it.
"I agree. It's taking a while."
I shut off the dryer and leaned out the door.
"I heard that."
He stood in the hallway in his good flannel shirt, with Tilly on his hip and a diaper bag over his shoulder.
The car keys hung from his front teeth.
He took them out.
"Take your time," he said.
"I'm about ten minutes."
"Take twelve. The car seat's in. The bag's in. The oven's off, and I checked the back door twice." He tipped his head. "If something goes wrong, I carry you out wet."
I started to laugh, and he grinned, and Tilly grabbed his ear.
She was six months old now.
She had a fuzz of dark hair that stood straight up, and a very firm opinion about being carried.
He had spent twenty minutes that morning trying to put a rubber band on it.
It had come out as a single sprout on top of her head, and he had stood back and looked at it proudly.
"She looks like a pineapple," I had said.
