Chapter 15: Unit 114
Roan's POV
The audio engineer asked to meet me at a diner on the east side, and he ordered nothing.
He was twenty-three, in a grey hoodie, and he kept one hand over his phone on the table.
"Anja told you who I am," he said.
"She said you're the one who gave her episode 12."
"I want out of that studio."
"There's a job open in the hospital's education office," I said. "Video for nurse training. It pays less than Kasper. It pays on the first of the month."
He stared at me.
"The administrator said she'd read your application if I put it in her hand today."
"What do you want for it?"
"The place where Kasper keeps the notebooks."
He didn't ask what notebooks.
He took a long breath and let it out through his nose.
"It's a storage unit by the airport. I rented it for him in March. It's in my name because he said his name would 'draw attention.'"
He slid a gate card and a folded slip across the table.
"Unit 114. The code is 0612. That's his mother's birthday."
"His mother in Phoenix."
"The one he told the whole country was dead."
I put the card in my coat.
I did not tell Anja where I was going, and I want to put that down plainly.
Our first term was that I tell her everything I know before she has to ask.
I had a reason.
If she went to that unit herself, the lawyer would have a photograph of her at a place with Kasper's boxes in it.
If I went, the unit was legally rented by a man who had just handed me his key.
That was the reason.
The other reason was that I wanted to put those notebooks in her hands, and I wanted to see her face when I did it.
