Chapter 24: Whichever Airport

"It's been recording since you stood up," Bridget said.

She had gone pink to the roots of her red hair.

"I wasn't going to do anything with it. I swear. I just wanted to have it. I didn't want to forget your face."

"Show me."

She slid the phone across the paper cloth with two fingers.

I played it from the start.

I skipped the list and the roaring and went straight to Poppy holding up a stick wound in thread.

There was Preston kneeling on the floor with his whole face open.

It was the best minute of my life, and it was on a screen.

"Han," Bridget said carefully. "I have a thought. You can say no."

"Go on."

"That ring. The thread, the stick, the little hand. You don't need her face." She took a breath. "You don't need anyone's face. You need his hand and hers, the part where it goes over the knuckle."

I looked at Poppy.

She was sitting on the floor under the table with the cat, feeding it a crumb of pastry with great seriousness.

Our rule was our rule.

No cameras near her face until she could say yes.

I had made that rule in a bathroom, with my back against a tub, scared out of my mind.

I thought about it for a long moment.

"Cut it to the hands," I said.

Bridget's whole face lit.

"The hands, the stick, the thread, his ring finger. No faces. Not hers, not Max's. Nothing that tells anyone where we live."
