Chapter 12: The Drowned Shrine
They followed the dry spring bed up the mountain because it was the only road that went the right way.
It began in the village green, where the cracked white basin lay.
It ran uphill under the pines as a long pale scar of dust and stones.
Luo walked on Jinghan's left, with his arm in a sling and his braid wound around his neck to keep it out of the way.
"If you look at me one more time like that," Luo said, "I'm going to kiss you in front of the trees."
"I'm only looking at your shoulder."
"You've been looking at my shoulder for an hour."
"It's a very good shoulder."
Luo kissed him in front of the trees.
It lasted rather longer than the trees deserved.
Jinghan came out of it with his hands in Luo's collar and a feeling that the day had become much easier to bear.
The spring bed ended at the Weeping Gate.
It ended at the black pool, where the crack in the rock had once fed a clear stream down to the village.
The pool looked as it had a week ago, except for the water.
It had sunk.
A dark band of wet stone ran around it, taller than a man now, slick with weed.
In the middle the black water lay low and still.
Below the waterline, something pale showed.
"Steps," Jinghan said.
Luo stared.
A stair was cut into the rock, going down into the pool.
There were twelve steps, white and worn smooth, leading into water that should have been twice as deep as a house.
