Chapter 21: Nathaniel's POV
Nathaniel's POV
The boardroom of Aldridge Holdings is on the fourteenth floor, and Preston had chosen my chair.
He sat at the head of the long table with his feet on the polished wood, a bottle of my own scotch at his elbow, and the door locked behind him.
Eight members of the board stood in the corridor outside with their coffee going cold.
Claire stood beside me with her arms folded.
She had refused to wait in the car.
I had stopped arguing about that sort of thing on the sidewalk.
"Open the door, Preston," I said through the wood.
"Say it first."
"Say what?"
"Say I'm chairman. The trustees threw out my mother, and you've been sitting in my father's chair for four years."
The security guard beside me looked at the ceiling.
I turned the handle, which was locked, and then I took the spare key from the guard's palm, and I opened the door myself.
Preston did not take his feet off the table.
His eyes were red, and his shirt was creased.
On the wood beside the bottle sat his mother's pearls.
He must have gone to the house for them.
I understood then that this was not a plan.
It was a boy who had lost everything in a week and had gone to the one room where he had once felt big.
"Get your feet off the table," I said.
"It's my father's table."
"Richard sat at the other end," I said. "He didn't like the head. He said the chair at the head belonged to whoever the company needed, not whoever wanted it."
He swung his legs down.
"You always do that," Preston said thickly. "You quote him like you owned him."
