Chapter 5: The Vote

The board of Aldridge Holdings met on the top floor of a glass building facing the harbor, around a table that sat twelve.

Nine people were already seated when Nathaniel and I walked in at eight sharp.

Margaret sat at the far end in black, not gray.

Preston sat beside her, unshaven, with dark circles under his eyes.

He saw me and looked away.

"This is a closed session," Margaret said. "Nathaniel, your wife cannot be here."

"My wife is here as my guest." Nathaniel pulled out a chair for me. "The motion concerns her, so she can stay."

He took the head of the table.

Nobody argued with him.

I sat down in my navy suit, with my hands in my lap.

I had not slept.

Jo had called me at six, whispering, and sent me two files.

"You'll want the second one," she said. "Trust me. I've been sitting on it since the church steps."

Margaret rose and opened a folder.

"Gentlemen, ladies. Yesterday a member of this family humiliated all of us in public. The chairman married a girl his own nephew was engaged to, in front of the whole town. The press has called twice since dawn."

She looked around the table, with her smile in place.

"This company depends on its reputation. I move that Nathaniel Aldridge step down as chairman until the board can restore order."

A man at the end of the table nodded.

Another coughed into his fist.

I counted faces.

Nathaniel's own face showed nothing.

"Is there a second?" he asked.

A gray-haired board member raised a finger.

"Seconded," he said.

"Before we vote," I said, "may I speak for two minutes?"

Margaret turned on me.

"This is not a church. You have no place in this room."

"She has two minutes," Nathaniel said. "If the board objects, they can say so."

Nobody did.

I took out my phone.

"You said yesterday that I humiliated the family," I said, looking at Margaret. "I want to play something your son and his friends didn't mean for me to have."
