Chapter 7: Founders' Weekend

Margaret's dining room seated thirty, and she had put every one of them where they could see me.

The long table glittered with silver and white roses.

The family sat in order of rank, with the foundation board on one side and the cousins on the other.

Preston sat across from me, in a navy blazer, freshly shaved.

Beside him, with one hand resting on her stomach, sat Tiffany.

She had been moved out of the hotel and into a pale blue dress.

She did not look at me.

Nathaniel took the chair at my right and laid his hand on the back of my neck as we sat.

It was warm and light, and it stayed.

Thirty people watched him do it.

"Your husband is very attentive," said an elderly woman on my left, in a voice that carried. "How refreshing."

"Thank you," I said, and I felt the pressure of his thumb at the edge of my hairline.

I could not have told you what the first course was.

Margaret rose over the salad, with her glass lifted.

"Thank you, all of you, for coming. It has been a difficult week. But a family is a thing that endures." She smiled. "And I'd like to ask Preston to say a few words."

Preston stood and tapped his glass.

"I want to thank my mother," he said, "and my uncle, and Claire, for being here tonight."

His eyes landed on me, warm and wounded and patient.

"I think we all made mistakes this week. I know I did. But I believe in second chances. To second chances," he said, and raised his glass.

Half the room drank.

Tiffany stared at her plate.

Preston sat down looking pleased, and I understood what he was doing.

He wanted the room to remember that I had walked away and that he was willing to forgive me.

I set my napkin beside my plate.

"May I answer that?" I asked.
