Chapter 12: Addie's POV

Addie's POV

Tucker's key still turned in the lock.

The condo was dark and smelled of cold coffee.

I didn't turn on the lights.

I walked through the living room, past the couch where Mallory had left a pink scarf, and into the bedroom.

The nightstand stood on his side of the bed.

It had a brass pull on the drawer, and I had opened that drawer a hundred times for his reading glasses or a charger.

I had never once opened it for the phone.

I sat on the edge of the mattress and pulled it out.

The reading glasses were on top.

Under them lay a tangle of old cords, a dead watch and a small grey phone with a cracked screen.

I held it in both hands.

It was lighter than I remembered.

Along the bottom edge ran the scratch I'd made when I dropped it on the steps of the library in my sophomore year.

He had kept the charger, too.

It was coiled next to the phone with a rubber band around it.

I pushed the plug into the wall socket beside the bed.

The phone lay in my hand for a long moment, dark.

Then a thin line of battery appeared on the screen.

I waited.

My own breathing was very loud.

The phone lit up with the logo, and then the lock screen.

It was a photo of the lake from my college dorm window.

Under it, a red circle sat on the corner of the voicemail icon.

I knew that red circle.
