Chapter 13: Thirty-One Messages

Tucker stood in the bedroom doorway with his car keys in one fist and the other hand held out.

His shirt was untucked, and I could smell the bourbon from the bed.

"Give it to me, Jos."

"It's mine."

"It's in my apartment, in my drawer."

"It's my phone, Tucker. The passcode is my grandmother's birthday."

He smiled the easy smile, the one that had talked me into a hundred small things.

"You're trespassing. I can have you removed."

"Then call someone." I kept the phone on my knee. "Tell them I'm in here with the carrier ad you made me swipe away for a year."

The smile slipped and came back.

"You were crying so hard that summer," he said. "I was protecting you."

"From what?"

"From him."

I looked at the screen.

I pressed the voicemail from August sixteenth, the one at 2:51 in the morning, and I held the phone out between us where he could hear every word.

"Addie, it's Heath."

His voice was young and scraped raw.

"Pick up, please. I'm at the nurses' station. I don't have my phone, I don't know where I left it. They're saying my dad won't make it through the night." A breath shook. "I don't have anyone else to say it to. Call this number back. Please."

Tucker didn't move.

Behind him, in the hall, someone was breathing hard.

Heath stood at the end of the corridor with one hand on the wall.

He had taken the stairs, all six floors.

He was looking at the phone in my hand, and I knew he had heard his own voice say please.

"Thirteen minutes," I said to Tucker. "He was in a hospital with no phone at 2:51. At 3:04 a text came from his number. Where was his phone?"
