Chapter 24: Second Grade
I sat up on the quilt with the phone in both hands.
Heath lay beside me with one arm behind his head, looking at the ceiling.
He did not say a word.
"You did this," I said.
"The carrier owed me a favor." His mouth twitched. "Dex knew a man. I had them put the old number back on, just for a night."
"The number is dead."
"It's alive until midnight."
I pressed the red circle with my thumb.
The message was a minute long.
His voice came out of the cracked little speaker, deeper than the young one.
It was dry and a little unsteady.
"Addie, it's Heath. I'm calling the number I called for six months. It's the morning we get married again."
"You're four doors down at your grandmother's, and I'm standing on the porch of our empty house, rehearsing."
He stopped for a moment.
"I used to wonder what I'd say if the phone ever picked up. It turns out I only want to say I'm here. I'll be here when you wake up. I'll be here on your worst Tuesday." A breath. "I never stopped. I didn't have to start again. Pick up anytime."
The message ended.
I put the phone on the quilt and put my head on his chest.
He wrapped his arm around me, and his heartbeat knocked against my ear, steady and unhurried.
