Chapter 17: Ring in Her Fist

Tierney walked straight to the bar and asked the sound technician for the microphone.

He gave it to her, because she was smiling and she was the bride's best friend.

"Could I have everyone's attention?" she said.

The talk died.

Eighty people turned, with forks half lifted.

"I wanted to give a gift to my dearest friends tonight," Tierney said. "Something to remember this marriage by."

She opened the laptop on the bar and held out a cable.

"Could you put this on the big screens?"

The technician hesitated.

Declan's mother nodded from table one, and he plugged it in.

Two screens lit up on either side of the river window.

I saw a bedroom, a lamp, and a man's bare shoulder.

"She'll never find out," said Tierney's voice from the speakers.

"She never told me one real thing," Declan said.

A woman at table six put her hand over her mouth.

Declan's father looked at his plate.

His mother made a sound I will never forget.

I stood in the middle of the floor with my hands at my sides, and I did not look away, because I had promised myself that I never would again.

The video ended on a black screen.

Nobody moved.

Tierney lowered the microphone and looked at me with great gentleness.

"I'm so sorry, Miri," she said. "Someone had to."

Chairs scraped.

Declan stepped out from beside the bar.

He walked to the center of the room and stood under both screens, and his face was white.
