Chapter 24: Truth Swap, Again
The headboard in the honeymoon suite was clean.
Someone at the Lakeshore had scrubbed the amber off the white padding, and the glass on the nightstand was new.
I stood at the window in my old green dress, looking down at the lake.
The lights on the water were the same.
Everything else had changed.
"Whiskey?" Declan said behind me.
"Half a glass."
He poured it and brought it over.
He was grinning, but it was a different grin, small and a little nervous, with nothing hidden under it.
"Same rules?" he said.
"One question each. Both true."
"And nobody gets mad."
"Nobody gets mad," I said.
We sat on the edge of the bed, side by side, with our shoulders touching.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand.
Hazel: Do not break the bed. I mean it. I'm the one who has to explain the bill.
I turned the phone over and laughed.
"Me first," Declan said. "Ready?"
"Go."
"After the arrest, I sat in the car in the Tin Roof lot for ten minutes while you talked to the detective." He turned the glass in his hand. "I wasn't thinking about Tierney. I was counting how many days I'd have if you decided to leave."
"How many?"
"Nine. I'd worked out a plan to make them last."
"Declan."
"That's my secret. I'm a coward who budgets for heartbreak." He drank. "Your turn."
I looked at the lake.
The ring on my finger caught the light.
I had spent ten years learning how to keep things behind a door, and I had never once been asked to open it for fun.
