Chapter 10: The Gate

By the third day I had a system.

I poured coffee at six, beer at noon, and whatever the men wanted after that, and I pulled each pint with my right hand while my left arm stayed folded in its sling.

The VP watched me for an hour and then said, "She's all right."

Nobody told me it was an honor.

Doc did, later, with a wink.

I was wiping down the bar when the prospect at the front gate called up on the radio.

"Prez. You need to come see this."

Doom set his coffee down.

"Violet. Stay."

"Is it about me?"

"Stay."

I followed him anyway, three steps behind, with my own prospect hurrying to keep up.

The gate was a chain-link barrier with a sliding bolt, and on the other side of it, on the gravel, stood a silver minivan.

My aunt stood next to it, rigid, with her purse held to her chest.

A woman I had met at my own wedding stood beside her, a thin woman with her son's jaw.

Kent's mother.

Marcy stood between them in a pink dress, with one hand flat on her stomach.

My stomach turned over.

"How did they find the compound?" I asked.

"Somebody told them," Doom said.

I stepped up to the fence.

"Hello, Violet," my aunt said. "We didn't want to do this at your brother's. We wanted somewhere private."

"This is private."
