Chapter 11: Hit and Run

The gate stayed shut between Doom and the deputy.

"A witness," Doom said, flat. "I don't know what that means."

"It means a car was totaled with a hurt woman inside," the deputy said. "It means a big black SUV was seen leaving the scene, and a man matching your description carried her to a van."

"I wasn't there."

"I think you were."

The deputy's eyes slid over Doom's shoulder and landed on me.

"Mrs. Tackett. There you are."

I stepped forward until I stood next to Doom.

"My name is Violet Tanner," I said.

"Ma'am, your husband told us you were hurt in a collision. He says a man in a leather vest took you away. We'd like your statement."

My heart hammered.

I had promised Doom I would say nothing, and I meant to keep it.

I didn't owe a deputy a single word, and I had never trusted a man who smiled at a gate.

"Here's my statement," I said.

The deputy took out a notebook.

"A car hit me on County Road 9. It was fast, and it kept going. I never saw the driver."

"Ma'am..."

"I woke up on the grass with a stranger in a van. My brother's friends found me and brought me here, because they have a doctor and I didn't have a ride."

I kept my eyes on his.

"That's all of it. If a black SUV hit me, I didn't see it."

The deputy's smile held, but it got thinner.

"Your husband says otherwise."

"My husband says plenty," I said. "He told me he was sick on our anniversary."

A few of the men laughed.

My aunt made a small outraged noise behind me.

"He's been very worried about you," the deputy said.
