Chapter 8: Everyone Lies

"Take me to him," I said.

"No, ma'am," the prospect said. "Prez said you stay put."

"Then tell Prez I'm going anyway."

He had barely opened his mouth when a black SUV pulled up at the curb, and the biggest man I knew got out and looked at me through the open door.

"Get in," Doom said.

"I was about to."

"I didn't ask you to argue."

"I'm not arguing. I'm getting in."

He studied me for one second and picked me up and put me in the passenger seat himself.

The prospect stayed on the porch.

We found Zane a mile away, on the shoulder, with a sheriff's cruiser behind his truck and its lights going.

Doom parked across the road.

A deputy stood by the pickup with a clipboard, and Zane stood with his hands in his pockets and a very blank face.

I climbed out before Doom could stop me.

"Zane."

"V? Get back in the car."

"Is this your sister?" the deputy said.

"Yes."

"Mrs. Tackett," the deputy said, looking at me. "Your husband's looking for you. He's been very worried."

I stopped.

I hadn't told anyone in the county where I was staying.

"My husband is in the hospital with a split lip," I said. "He can look from there."

The deputy's smile thinned.

"I'm only stopping your brother for a broken taillight," he said. "Warning, no ticket. You're free to go."

He gave Zane a slip, got back in the cruiser, and sat there a minute before pulling away.

He wrote something down first.

Doom had come up behind me without a sound.

"He asked about you by name," I said quietly.
