Chapter 23: Two Sides of a Table
The board adjourned at noon without a vote, and the retired judge asked to speak to me alone in the corridor.
He said only one thing.
"I'm eighty-one years old, Mrs. Lund, and I have heard a great many people explain a sound. That woman did not explain hers."
Then he shook my hand and went down in the elevator.
I did not tell Soren what he had said.
That night I sat on the kitchen floor of my flat with my back against the cabinets and a bag of frozen peas on my left hand.
The hand had cramped after the whistle.
Wren was asleep in her crib, and the radiator was clanking, and Elin had gone downstairs with a plate of leftovers and a face full of questions.
I had not told her those, either.
There was a knock at nine o'clock.
It was not Tuesday or Saturday.
I got up, and I looked through the peephole, and I opened the door anyway.
Soren stood on the landing in his shirtsleeves, with his tie in his pocket.
"I know it's the wrong day," he said. "You can send me home. I'll go."
"Come in."
He came in as far as the kitchen table.
He did not sit.
"I did something today that you didn't ask for," he said.
"What?"
"After the board, I told the chair I'm withdrawing from the foundation altogether. My name comes off the trust. Margit's seat goes to a vote in September. And I told Lund Harbor's lawyers to draft a statement that says the Maddox story was wrong." He swallowed. "I told them to do it whether you take me back or not."
I put the peas on the counter.
"Say that again."
"Whether or not you take me back."
