Chapter 4: Let Me Look at You

He made coffee in a dented moka pot, in his boxers, with a spoon in his mouth.

I sat on the scarred counter wearing his shirt and nothing else, and watched the sun come up over Chase Street.

"I should tell you my finances," he said.

"Okay."

"I'm a surgeon. I have student loans I'll be paying until I'm fifty. I drive a Volvo with a cracked dash. I can afford groceries and a lawyer, and I'll hire you the best one in the state."

I almost told him.

The words were right behind my teeth: my grandmother left me four hundred million dollars and I'm the only one alive who knows.

But my father had known my accounts and my passwords and my mother's maiden name.

He'd still thrown me out of my own life in one night.

I wasn't ready to say any number aloud again to anyone.

"I don't want a lawyer yet," I said. "I want a day."

"You have as many as you like."

He poured two cups and handed me one.

"You don't have to pay me back for anything," he said. "Not the license, not the rent, nothing. That's not how this works."

"How does it work?"

"You live here. You're my wife. You do what you want." He shrugged.

A muscle moved in his bare shoulder. "I'm at the hospital seventy hours a week. You'll get sick of me for the six I'm home."
