Chapter 5: Clubhouse Night

The Route 9 Riders held a cookout every Friday night, and I had not missed one in ten years.

I walked into the clubhouse that Friday with the blue helmet under my arm and Hank one step behind me.

"You don't have to come in," I'd told him in the truck.

"Yes, I do," he'd said, and turned off the engine.

The room was loud and full of smoke from the grill out back.

Fifty riders stood or sat at long wooden tables, and every one of them knew me.

The noise dropped as I crossed the floor.

Travis stood by the pool table in his club vest with his arm in a sling.

Behind the bar, with her cast up on a stool and her hair in a fresh ponytail, sat Misty.

I walked straight to the bar.

I set the helmet on the polished wood where everyone could see it, with the cracked bee facing the room.

"This is mine," I said.

Nobody moved.

"I painted it over nine nights in my father's shop. I painted it for Travis for our tenth anniversary. It was supposed to be on his head."

I turned it a quarter turn, so the stars caught the light.

"On Sunday morning, I got a call to Route 9 for a bike down. I found this on the head of the woman riding behind my husband."

A low sound went around the room.

It was not quite a word.

"That's not how it was," Travis said, stepping forward. "Bree, you're making a scene."

"I'm telling people what happened."

"Hey." Misty sat up, and her voice was thin and wounded. "I didn't know he had a wife. I swear on my life. He told me he was divorced. I'm a victim here too."
